The Save the Summer Flounder Fishery Fund (SSFFF), established seven years ago by a group of East Coast fishing enthusiasts, operates under the guidance of a board that includes recreational anglers, charter boat captains, and industry representatives from the fishing tackle sector.
The SSFFF remains independent of political affiliations and does not serve as a lobbying entity for either recreational or commercial fishing groups.
Our mission has consistently been non-political, with a clear focus on enhancing fisheries science. The belief is that funding better scientific research will lead to more informed management decisions and fairer access to fish stocks for all parties involved.
Since its inception, the SSFFF has allocated over $130,000 in donations and grants towards research aimed at developing more precise stock assessment models for Summer Flounder. Notably, SSFFF-sponsored research led to the inclusion of sex-specific mortality data in the most recent stock assessment, thanks to a groundbreaking study by the eminent scientist Dr. Mark Maunder, which SSFFF exclusively commissioned. Furthermore, the fund played a crucial role in averting a potential shutdown of the Summer Flounder fishery six years ago.
